How to Purchase Machinery & Equipment in the United States - Part 1

Introduction

Almost every type of company has previously had, currently has, or will have the need to acquire some type of equipment or spare parts to repair their equipment. Many companies frequently make these purchases in order to resell or rent out equipment they already own. Sometimes individual owners make these types of purchases as well, although it is infrequent. The truth is that without the need to transfer money or other assets at some point, you don't have a business.

I consider it important to share knowledge and experience regarding the risks involved in completing buy-sell transactions which involve considerable amounts of money and equipment or parts and require a high level of reliability related to the risks associated with the users’ lives. Taking this information into consideration is necessary for any person or company that conducts these types of business operations. This information is only a reference which is based on experience and should not be taken as a universal rule. Each person or company has its own way of conducting their transactions.

We usually feel safe and confident when buying machinery locally because we can see, touch, taste and even smell what we are buying. We feel safer when we are doing business with someone we already know and know how to negotiate. And, let’s be honest, the best part is when we make a good purchase at a very low price. In this case we can have a party and celebrate. However, all of us in this business know that unfortunately this is not always the case. Sometimes we make mistakes that cost us money, which is part of human nature, but sometimes these mistakes are more tragic. Our mistakes, and those we learn from other people, allow us to learn and avoid losses in the future.

What would happen if we needed equipment, machinery, or spare parts that are hard to come by locally and we are forced to import them from the United States? Or what if what is needed isn’t available locally or we know you can get it at a lower price if we import it? Unfortunately, the main goal of many importers is buying at the lowest price. There is no doubt that your first international purchase brings a lot of fear and anxiety, which increases the risk of making mistakes that are difficult to reverse. Many importers have made simple but costly mistakes that could have been avoided. Buying a $500 computer online is not the same as buying a $50,000 crane that requires at least one operator.

In subsequent posts, I will delve deeper into the typical buying process used by many importers and reveal the mistakes that could be avoided. I will discuss the challenges and risks that must be faced. Then, we will analyze what a fair and safe transaction would look like for the importer and exporter. Finally, I will share how we have perfected our sales system to ensure the trust of our customers for many years. I hope it will be useful to you and allow you to grow your business while blessing others with your knowledge and experience.
